Aerobie AeroPress Coffee Maker UK Review

 March 11, 2017

By  Enda McLarnon

This is my review of the Aerobie AeroPress Coffee Maker. This particular method of making filter coffee, has been around for quite a few years. It is now starting to gain some popularity in the UK market.

This method is for those of you who like their coffee as easy to make as instant, but want the richer flavour of real coffee.

Aerobie AeroPress Coffee Maker Review

As you can see from the image above, this one comes with all the parts that you will need to get started. This type of coffee maker is also really useful for anyone who travels.

They are great for caravan and holiday home users. You can buy this with or without the small travel bag.

These are made in slightly different styles, by different manufacturers such as Aerobie, Hario and Chemex, but they all work on the same principle.

They are simple to use, fast to clean and no need to worry about having to wash up or clean any fiddly bits. It is a great way of making fresh tasting coffee, and affordable for most buyers, at around the £25-30 price point.

What Buyers Say About the Aerobie AeroPress Coffee Maker

Below we have summarised what real life buyers make of this Aeropress coffee maker. Overall they rate this model as a 4.7 out of 5 star coffee maker. This is based on a 5 star rating system, with 1 being the lowest rating, and 5 stars being the highest.

It is pretty easy to see from these ratings, that 8.4 out of 10 people gave this one the full 5 star rating. It really does not get much better than that. Over 95% rated it a 4 star product or higher. Around 2% were clearly not happy with their purchase. Generally speaking though, the majority of buyers were extremely pleased with their purchase.

What Buyers Didn't Like Abut the Aerobie AeroPress Coffee Maker

If the percentage of 1 star reviews is small, I tend to ignore that, as the complaints are normally pretty small. The complaints with this one are very low at only 2% However, I did take a look at those.

There are not a lot of complaints. Those that I did find are actually quite old (3-4 years ago) and they said that a cafetiere did a better job. That is of course the classic French Press style. It is fair to say that French Press coffee drinkers, like their coffee to have a kick in it. I am like that myself, but there isn't a great deal of difference. It depends on how much coffee you use, and I found this one strong enough.

Before diving off into a detailed review, it is worthwhile finding out what this particular style of coffee maker can deliver.

Underneath, you will find a video review of what the capability of this model can in fact do. It is well worth a quick look.

So now you know what it does, let's take a closer look at some of the details. If you have never used one of these before, then honestly you should give this a try. It makes really good coffee quickly. In addition you get to avoid any major cleaning of component parts.

Aerobie AeroPress Coffee Maker Main Review

Aerobie AeroPress Coffee Maker

Priced at around £25-30, this is for those who like the taste of real coffee. It is however worth mentioning that this makes a filter type coffee, similar to that which you would get from a filter machine, or from the classic French Press.

It does not make espresso type coffee that you would get from a full blown machine. That is because the brewing method is quite different. With this method, you put in your chosen coffee grains, pour in the water, allow to brew and then push out the coffee through a filter. Now it can still make an espresso of kinds, but for me not to the standard of the higher end coffee machines.

So although some air pressure is used to force the water over the coffee, it is nothing like the pressure you would be able to get in a normal coffee machine. To get a good cup of coffee using the Aeropress, a good method is to push the hot water through the beans as quickly as possible. That will avoid any risk of a bitter taste.

I  have always found that with many of the coffee brewing methods, people do have a tendency to either boil or stew the coffee. Now although that will guarantee a strong coffee, it does leave a very strong after taste. I think it also ruins the actual original flavour of the coffee.

My advice is to buy good quality coffee beans, grind them with a high quality burr grinder, such as the DeLonghi KG79, and then make your coffee with that nice fresh grind. The thickness of the grind is all important. That will take a little bit of trial with different adjustments. Just remember, the finer the grind, the harder it will be to push the water through.

Personally I think "hardened" coffee drinkers will struggle with this Aeropress method. They like their coffee strong and "blow your head off style." This coffee maker for me delivers a great flavour, but that may not be enough for those who like the really strong stuff.

Who Would Buy the Aerobie AeroPress?

This product has sold thousands, and more likely millions of these Aeropress styles. Those who buy them love them. The typical buyer is likely to end up owning 2-3 of these. They will have one at home and one at work. They are also handy to have in an office, garage, workshop and even the humble garden shed.

In the UK, I have seen plenty of these where people have a shed in an allotment. They are also popular with caravan users, and those with camping vans or holiday homes. There is no question that these are fast, make good coffee and require almost no cleaning at all. That makes them really handy to use, and to keep using.

Hopefully that video has helped you decide if this one is worth a try.

My Summary & Verdict on the Aerobie AeroPress Coffee Maker

This is a very versatile method of making coffee, as you can with some adjusting, make a whole range of coffee types. That is a good thing as it is not limited in choice.

This product has an RRP of around £29.99. Most shops and online stores however sell this at around £25-27. Look out for that type of price. If you can find it at that amount of money, then it is a good buy, in my opinion.

Aerobie AeroPress Coffee Maker travel bag

You can, as I mentioned at the beginning of this review, that you can buy this with or without the travel bag. The price difference is small at only £2-3, so for that, it is probably a good idea to buy it with the bag.

It would especially be a good idea if you plan on using this at a caravan, or in a holiday home. The final choice is of course yours. With or without it, it is still a popular way of making a really good cup of coffee.

Costs of Using the Aerobie Aeropress

AeroPress Filter Papers Pack

I always like to know what the real costs of making coffee actually are. You will of course have to buy the coffee maker, which is around £25-30. Along with that you will have to consider the cost of the coffee, and the cost of boiling the water.

You have those costs with making any coffee. The other additional costs for this particular method are the purchase of filters. New coffee makers come with around 350 of these small paper filters. So that as you can see is enough to make at least 350 coffees. Some people do reuse these at least once, so up to 700 coffees.

Buying new filters cost around £4 for a pack of 350. That is around 1 pence per filter and that is as cheap as you will be able to find on the market.

  1. Thanks heaps for the review. I am definitely in the 84% that love it. Like you mentioned I think that one of the greatest strengths of the Aeropress is it’s versatility. That there are just so many recipes and methods you can experiment with. I also do like it that it requires a lot less equipment than say pour over
