Chemex Wood Neck Coffee Maker UK Review

 December 20, 2017

By  Enda McLarnon

This is my long and detailed review of the popular Chemex Wood Neck coffee maker. When it comes to just pure design, and for anyone who appreciates style, then we believe that it does not get much better than this.

It has an RRP of £43, and at that price, we think this one is very good value. That said, you can almost always find this Chemex model cheaper online.

Chemex 3-Cup Wood Neck Coffee Maker

As you can see from the image above, this one most certainly looks the part, and it will of course bring a lot of style to your kitchen or dining area.

The images shows the 3 cup coffee maker, but you can also buy this Chemex in a 6 cup, 8 cup or a 10 cup. Please not that the RRP will vary depending on which model you decide to go for.

How Buyers Rate the Chemex Wood Neck Coffee Maker

96%
Buyer Satisfaction

We like to read everything that other buyers have to say about products. That allows us to accurately summarise, how good this coffee maker really is. So here is what we found.

Overall buyers rated this at 96%, which is an excellent rating. We would expect to find the rating this high as this is a pristine coffee maker.

It has a delightful hour glass style, and with some paper filters can make wonderful tasting coffee, and the glass ensures there is nothing that absorbs odours or chemicals.

How To Brew a Chemex Coffee

  • Boil the kettle.
  • Fold the Chemex filter into a cone shape
  • Wet the filter with the boiled water, and then remove the water from the chemex maker
  • Add 3.5 tablespoons of medium/coarse grind (Sea salt look) per cup required
  • Add 280 ml of water per cup required
  • Pour water to soak the grinds at intervals of 20 seconds leaving to brew for 40 seconds each time (may need 4-6 pours)
  • Remove the filter, pour and sit back and enjoy

I have also shown this method in the video below.

The Pros & Cons of the Chemex Wood Neck Coffee Maker

The Cons

Many potential buyers would prefer to use some type of stainless steel filter, rather than continue to buy paper filters. Sadly they will now work that well with this coffee maker.

Chemex make their own thicker filters and are designed to work with this coffee maker. Each filter costs around 7p on average.

To get a couple of mugs of coffee, you will have to buy the 6 cup or even the 8 cup to get that. The 3 cup will deliver 2 cups, ore one mug, but not enough for two mugs.

This is made of glass, and if you drop it somewhere hard, it is highly likely to break.

The Pros

The coffee really does taste really fresh, and it brews really well when you use the right filters with it. Don't be tempted to buy thinner cheaper paper filters with this maker, as they will leave you disappointed.

The Actual Taste of the Coffee

For anyone who has never tried a pour over style of coffee, then this will give you a very pleasant surprise. It tastes really good each and every time. Like any coffee maker, it will take a little experimenting with to begin.

Finding the right grind, the right coffee bean and getting you water ratio set properly always takes a little tweaking, but for me, that is all part of the fun of making coffee.

Easy To Use

It doesn't really get much easier than this. It is even easier to clean. Just throw away the filter, rinse it out and you are good to go.

Video Review of the Chemex Coffee Maker

Sometimes it is better to see than to read. This is a good video that is well worth watching as it gives you a much better understanding of the product.

If you have not tried this method before, then treat yourself, and your friends to this brewing method, which I know you will enjoy.

Our Verdict On the Chemex Wood Neck Coffee Maker

This is a popular brewing method in many counties, but just not so popular in the UK. People here tend to look towards pod machines or espresso machines for their coffee brewing.

This is a very pure way of making coffee, and when you get the grind right with your favourite beans, this is certainly an interesting way of making coffee.

Personally we think it also tastes great, and there is no after taste, or grains left in the bottom of your cup, always a good thing. If you haven't tried Chemex brewing before, then we would recommend that you give it a try.
