 November 5, 2016

By  Enda McLarnon

This is our review of the best selling De'Longhi KG79 Professional Burr Grinder. This model has been around for a very long time, and continues to be one of the most affordable burr grinders, on the UK market.

This is the grinder that we prefer and we have had it for quite a few years. It comes from the very good De'Longhi brand which is an Italian brand, well known in the coffee industry.

It uses 2 grinding plates, and has a 16-level adjustable grinding selector. It also has a cup selector so as you can grind just the coffee you need.

A Little About the De'Longhi Brand

Main Review of the DeLonghi KG79

We think it is always worth having a look at the product on video. It just gives you a better sense of what you are actually buying. Below we have a video that will take you through what the product looks like, and how it is used.

As you can see from the video review above, this model is very simple to use. It is also very easy to keep clean.

Key Features of the KG79

  • The bean container capacity is 120 grams
  • It has 17 grinding levels
  • The cup selector determines the quantity: up to 12 cups
  • It has a removable transparent tank to collect the ground coffee
  • The mill stops automatically if one of the two tanks is removed
  • Has a transparent bean container, top lid and removable powder container

This is an electric burr grinder. To make it work, it will need to be plugged into a main's supply. In the UK that is the standard plug connection from the 240 volt supply.

This professional burr grinder has the capacity to grind 120 g of coffee beans. That is enough to make up to 12 normal sized coffee cups. So for example if you wanted to drink 3 cups a day, a full grind would give you enough ground coffee for 4 days.

One useful feature is that the lid of the grinder is see through. That means you can quickly look in and see how your grind is going. With some other models, you have to stop the grinding process, take the lid off, and then look in.

The bean container itself can be detached and sealed to keep your coffee fresh. It is also see through, and that is also useful to see how much you have left.

There is a handy cord storage which keeps the lead neatly tucked away until it is required.

What Buyers Liked & Disliked

What Buyers Liked

  • Very neat, tidy and compact
  • No mess when using this
  • Really good value for money
  • The adjustments are very accurate
  • It can produce a grind with a fineness more than enough for most espresso machines.

Didn't Like so Much

  • The small container makes it a bit tricky to transfer the ground coffee to the filter cup.
  • A few buyers said their grinder arrived with a European plug

Our Summary of the Delonghi KG79

Like most things in life, you do get what you pay for. At the £45-£50 price point, this is just about as good as it gets. A few people did complain that they couldn't get the really fine grind they wanted. That is true, though it does get very close.

To get really perfect grinds, means you need more settings and higher quality burrs. Sadly that also means forking out £65-100. This one does a really good job, and you are paying less for this model.

For us it does a good job and we have had this one for a few years now. We have also used the more expensive Krups GVX242, and that one is a better grinder. It did cost close to £80 though. so we guess it is a question of value for money.

Overall the Delonghi KG79 Professional Burr Grinder does a very good job. That is why it is a best selling product. Good quality at a very good price, and one that has stood the test of time.

  1. I enjoyed your review and this grinder sounds ideal for my needs. Especially as I have a DeLonghi Scultura ECZ 351.BK Espresso maker.

However, I recently bought a Krups GVX2 grinder, which has been a dreadful waste of money. The finest setting doesn’t grind fine enough for my coffee maker and the coarsest setting seems a tad too fine for a cafetière. In fact there is little discernible difference in appearance between the 17 grind settings.

So even though your list of dislikes don’t sound that bad, if others are suggesting it doesn’t grind fine enough, I’m a little concerned that I could be trading in one grinder that’s not up to scratch for another with the same issue.

Am I right in thinking this, or would the KG79 be the perfect solution for my Scultura ECZ 351.BK?

    Thanks in advance.

    Gary
