5 Cool Tips for Making Iced Coffee Drinks at Home

In the UK, iced coffee is slowly starting to become a popular choice, for many coffee lovers. In this article we will offer you 5 great tips, that will help you make great iced coffee, in the comfort of your own home.

In the USA and indeed in Europe, iced coffee sales go from strength to strength. The UK has been a lot slower in adopting this trend.

Nevertheless, there are many people, especially the younger generation, who are starting to adopt this cold version of coffee.

According to the just-drinks website, "Jimmy's Iced Coffee has grown in four years to become a million-pound-plus business. With each passing month, Jimmy's Iced Coffee is gaining wider acceptance by both the UK retail trade and the country's public at large."

Many of the coffee shops offer a wide range of cappuccinos, mocha lattes, and many flavours of syrups and toppings. Lots of customers are now discovering that coffee is just as tasty and refreshing - when served cold.

Top 5 Tips for Super Iced Coffee

There are of course many ways to make this particular drink. My advice is do not be afraid to experiment, and come up with unique drinks of your own. Below I have offered a few suggestions, that should get you on your way.

There are many options available in the UK market. Just think of the many flavours of syrups, the different types of chocolate and the many types of spices available. Some of the more popular choices are iced vanilla, and my own favourite iced rum.

Iced Coffee Tip No 1 - Full Flavours

Always pour the flavouring syrup into the cup first. Once that is done add your espresso or coffee, then the ice, and finally top it off with cold milk. That is the most popular choice for most UK iced coffee drinkers.

Iced Coffee Tip No 2 - Watering Down

It is very easy to water your drink down too much. Cool your favourite coffee beverage with ice cubes made from fresh-brewed coffee instead of water. Adding water is of course a handy option, but just be aware that it will dilute the taste.

Iced Coffee Tip No 3 - Use Good Quality Coffee

Try if possible to use a machine that produces a high quality coffee or espresso. The best coffee that you can get is one that has been freshly ground. You should always buy your own beans, and grind them just before use. Here is a link to my favourite coffee grinder.

If you happen to own a bean to cup coffee machine, then you have the ideal coffee machine for making great coffee. They are expensive of course, and really only for people who truly love their coffee. The bottom line is, that the better quality coffee you use, then the better tasting iced coffee you can make.

Iced Coffee Tip No 4 - Be Creative

As I mentioned earlier do not be afraid to experiment a little. Some people like peppermint, some like aniseed and many love the taste of chocolate or caramel.

I like this idea of adding a personalised touch to my iced coffee beverages. That can be something as simple as whipped cream, chocolate shavings, nutmeg or cinnamon.

Iced Coffee Tip No 5 - Understanding Milk and Sugar

Most people simply use cold milk. That works fine. However it is also interesting to use sweetened condensed milk, or even cream. For sweetening purposes, you can also use fine sugar. Normal sugar will not dissolve in cold coffee, but finer sugar will.

So, as you can see there are any number of choices. You are really only limited by your own imagination. I have made a few that didn't turn out quite as expected. I even tried one with a chilli kick, and that was really a disaster. Still, at least I tried.

My advice is to experiment and have some fun. Try the classics first though, to see if you have a taste for iced coffee.
