10 Facts You Never Knew About Coffee

Here are ten facts that you may have never known about coffee. Hopefully you will find them interesting and as they say, you do learn something new every day.

As many of you drink coffee every day, these facts can be interesting and we hope they are at least a talking pint for you at the coffee morning or at the office.

Fact 1 - Coffee is considered to be an aphrodisiac

Most people will know that coffee contains a high dose of caffeine. The favourite drink of many is one of the world’s most socially acceptable stimulants.

It has been proven that coffee can increase stamina and the overall length of intimate sessions. According to Temptations by Michael and Ellen Albertson, various studies have shown that coffee drinkers have sex more frequently than non-coffee drinkers.

So have a little think about that, the next time you sip your favourite brew. Just remember though that good coffee should be freshly ground.

Fact 2 - Coffee - An Interesting History

Coffee was first discovered in Ethiopia, and it is claimed that Kaldi, an anicent goat herder first found the plant and the beans. He took those to the monks and when they used them they noticed an increased state of alertness.

Then they spread through the Arab culture for thousands of years. They did not come to what is now known as the western world until the 1500's. Many religious people believed that coffee was a drink of the devil. Pope Clement VIII took a sip of coffee and then gave it his blessing.

Coffee was first known in Europe as "Arabian Wine."

Fact 3 International Coffee Day

Did you know that the world official coffee day is October 1st. There are 75 member states that belong to the International Coffee Organisation.

Fact 4 - Professional Coffee Tasters

Did you know that professional coffee tasters use two tablespoons of ground coffee beans for 6 ounces of water?

Fact 5 - Has Coffee more Caffeine than an Energy drink?

A typical coffee from Starbucks has more caffeine than a typical energy drink.

Fact 6 - How Much Coffee Do We Drink?

The population of the earth drinks close to 2.5 BILLION cups of coffee every single day. Coffee is most effective if consumed between 9.30 and 11.30 in the morning. 57% of all coffee drunk happens at breakfast.

The French philosopher, Voltaire, reportedly drank fifty cups of coffee a day.

Fact 7 - Coffee Beans are not actually beans

People do refer to the roasted bean as a bean where in reality they are not beans at all but the pits of fruit. It takes 42 coffee beans to make one espresso.

Fact 8 - Coffee is good for the blood flow

Drinking a cup of coffee can significantly improve the blood flow. Regular coffee drinkers have about 1/3 less asthma symptoms than those of non-coffee drinkers according to a Harvard researcher who studied 20,000 people.

Fact 9 - Coffee Can Get Expensive How much do you want to pay?

One of the world's most expensive coffees is made from the dung of Thai elephants. Kopi luwak is a Vietnamese weasel coffee and one of the most expensive in the world today. It is about 15-20 times more expensive than normal coffee beans.

Fact 10 - Who Drinks the Most Coffee - The Dutch are the Winners

Per head of capital, the Netherlands is the biggest consumer of coffee and they average 2.4 cups of coffee per person per day. Americans drink 400 million cups per day and the British spend about 750 million pounds per year buying coffee.
