Breville Coffee Express Personal Coffee Machine UK Review

 October 14, 2017

By  Enda McLarnon

The Breville coffee express is one of the best selling single cup coffee makers, that is currently available on the UK market.

Many people, who do not want to pay High Street prices, buy this one, and make their own brew before leaving for work.

This model is also really useful for those who commute to work, for days out and even for taking to concerts.

It is in effect your own personal filter coffee machine, that comes with a 500 ml bottle, designed to keep your coffee hotter for longer.

It is considered to be a breakfast style of machine, though of course you can use it any time you like.

You can also use this model to make tea instead of coffee. A single teabag with around 300 ml of water, makes a fine cup of tea.

The Breville Brand

The Breville brand is a popular household name and became very well known when they introduced the sandwich toaster back in the 1980's.

Breville now make kettles, toaster, and a range of food preparation products such as blenders and many others.

Breville is a part of Jarden Consumer Solutions (Europe) Limited.

How Buyers Rate the Breville Coffee Express Personal Coffee Machine

There are plenty of buyers for this product, and overall it has achieved and maintained a consistent buyer satisfaction rating of 86%.

That is a good score, and it should tell you that overall, buyers really like this personal coffee machine, after they have bought and used it.

With an RRP of just under £20, I also think it does represent pretty good value for money.

Customer Complaints.

When we read the reviews there were a few complaints. We think you should know about the product, and indeed any potential problems it may have.

The good news is that there are not many complaints, but they did sit at around 10% of buyers, so they should not be ignored.

Let's have a look and see what those were. There were three main complaints from around 10% of buyers:

  • Some buyers simply said the coffee was never hot enough
  • Some buyers said that there was a plastic taste to the coffee
  • A few buyers said that it broke after a few uses and they had to get it replaced.

Around 65% of buyers rated this personal coffee maker very highly, and 25% rated it as good. Therefore you do have to balance that against the 10% who made the complaints.

How Does the Breville Coffee Express Work?

The system is pretty simple to use. The manufacturer Breville state clearly that this is coffee at the touch of a button. It pretty much is how it works.

The whole thing takes about 5 minutes from beginning to end. Check out the 2 minute video below, and you will see exactly how it works.

Key Features of the Breville Coffee Express

I also like to list what I think are the important features about this coffee maker, and why I think they are important.

Ease of Use

It is certainly easy to use. Plug it in, fill it up with water, add your coffee of choice, and hit a button. Come back in 5 minutes and your travel cup is filled and ready to go. Then add sugar, milk or cream as required and you are good to go.

Ease of Cleaning

The filter machine comes apart very quickly, and all the parts are suitable for a dishwasher.

If you don't own one of those, then you can of course quickly take it apart and hand wash it.

The Coffee Bottle

It holds 500 ml of coffee and that is a generous amount. It is also BPA free, and it is double sealed to retain the heat. The bottle is also impact resistant, so will be OK if it is dropped.

The lid is designed to be leak proof, and has a drink hole cover, when not being used.

The bottle will also fit almost any car cup holder.

The bottle also looks pretty good as well.

Permanent Filter

One thing I hate having to do is constantly replacing those paper filters.

The good news is that this one has a permanent filter, which will just need cleaned after each use. It is very easy to remove.

Unit Size
Overall the unit is compact so will not take up a lot of room on your kitchen worktop. It measures 12.2 x 17.3 x 30.8 cm and weighs about 1.2 Kg.

Water Markings
You pour the water into a wide opening at the top. There are three water markings, and those allow you to get the right strength of coffee that you want. The markings are easy to see.

Quick Brew
It takes around 5 minutes thanks to a 650 watt motor, which quickly brews the coffee.

My Verdict on the Breville Coffee Express

Buying any coffee maker is always about your expectations. Breville are a very good brand, and this single cup system has an RRP of around £20. For that type of money, the big majority of buyers seem very satisfied.

There were a few niggly complaints, with reference to taste, the coffee not being hot enough, and the machine breaking down. Those complaints were a small number, and it is worth keeping in mind, that the majority of buyers thought it was great.

For me, buying your coffee every morning, quickly adds up in a month. It can easily cost around £50 a month which is often a surprise to people. 20 working days a month at £2.50 or more per day can certainly dent the budget.

At £20 for your own system, it is not a huge investment, and worth a try. If you are buying ground beans for this one, make sure they are suitable for a filter style machine. You can't use an espresso grind for this machine. Filter coffee needs to have a coarser grind.

A good coffee to use is either the illy or Lavazza brands, which are both excellent Italian coffees.
