Filter Coffee Machine Buyers Guide - Pros & Cons

Personally I am a fan of filter coffee, and have been for years. That is of course, as long as it is made properly. Not every coffee maker gets that right, and some of them are just terrible at making coffee.

Those that we have included on the lists above, are actually all good, as you can see from the buyer ratings.

Why a Filter Machine?

Filtered coffee is simply a brewing method that makes quite strong coffee with quite a distinctive flavour. It is served in many hotels up and down the United Kingdom. It is also served in many restaurants and cafes.

Typically it uses thickly ground coffee grains which are then flooded with hot water, and it is then filtered, through a permanent filter, a paper filter or a combination of both.

This does make strong coffee, and the filtering process makes sure no grains end up in the bottom of your cup. It is also a very simple brewing process.

The advantages of this method is that it is easy, pretty fast to make coffee and overall tastes really good. The filter machines are also a lot cheaper than other types of coffee machine.

The disadvantages are that you do need to get the filtering process right to avoid grains in the bottom of the cup or mug. The other big disadvantage is that the coffee tastes great when first brewed, but does not hold its heat for very long.

Bean to Cup Filter Machines

Ideally a filter machine that freshly grinds coffee beans, will always makes the freshest, and best tasting coffee. Yes this type of filter machine are a lot more expensive, but it is hard to beat the taste of the coffee from these.

They also do take a bit more effort to use and to clean, and quite frankly, many people just don't have the time to do that. They are also very expensive, when compared to those shown on my list as all of those use pre-ground coffee. If you want to check out bean to cup options please click here.

The filter machines that I have shown on this list are electric filter coffee machines. Those come with a UK 3 pin plug which you plug into the main's electricity. You then fill with water, and add your coffee and allow that coffee to brew.

Filter Machines - Keeping the Coffee Warm

This is probably the single biggest complaint, about any type of filter coffee maker, and we certainly noticed that, when we read the many hundreds of reviews.

Ideally most people want to put a pot of this on in the morning, and then be able to sip away at it, the rest of the morning, even into the afternoon.

Most of these have some type of keep warm system usually a warming ring on the machine. That said even the good ones, are probably only effective, up to about an hour. After that, at best the coffee will be luke warm. Personally I hate that temperature of coffee.

It is just a drawback of filter systems generally, and no manufacturer, has really grasped the nettle on this one. Aside from this I also believe that coffee is always best served fresh.

You may have found machines years ago that has a hot plate that just stayed on. That was considered to be a fire risk. As such and under current EU regulations all hot plates have to have an auto-shut off. Typically that can be set at anything from 30-45 minutes.

Paper Filters vs Permanent Filters

All filter type machines will require some type of filter so as the coffee jug does not end up full of grains. No-one wants to drink coffee like that and a filter will prevent that from happening.

The question is it best to have a permanent filter or is is better to use paper filters? That is a very good question. Permanent filters will always be the cheapest option as they do not need to be replaced. Overall they do an OK job, but I have always found that paper filters do a better job.

The reason they do a better job is that they capture more of the really dusty fine grains.

The disadvantage of paper filters is that you do have to buy them on an ongoing basis, so there will always be a cost, though that is usually small. You do also lose a little bit of flavor with a paper filter, though it is just a little bit. Some people do notice the difference though.

Summary of Filter Coffee Machines

This is a brewing method that has been around for a long time. Put in the grinds, fill the machine with water, insert a filter and switch the machine on to make a carafe of coffee.

This is an easy method of brewing that makes strong rich coffee. This is not espresso type coffee but makes what I call a flatter stronger type of coffee.

It does make an interesting change for many people and I am one of those. Filter coffee is not something that I drink every day, but I do like the odd cup from time to time.

That is why I own a filter coffee machine, and hopefully my top 10 list above will point you in the right direction, if you fancy making filter coffee.

    1. If you can hold on for the January sales I would recommend doing that. I recently bought the Morphy Richards 162740 coffee maker and that is around £20…gets good reviews online as well. I haven’t had time to do a full review on it as yet, but makes good coffee

  1. An important feature is carafes that don’t drips much! Do you have any comments about that In relation to these recommended models?
