Bodum Pebo 8-Cup Vacuum Coffee Maker UK Review

 September 22, 2017

By  Enda McLarnon

The Bodum Pebo is an 8-cup vacuum coffee maker. It has a 1 litre (34 ounce) capacity and is made from borosilicate glass. That type of glass is designed to resist heat, and prevent the glass from shattering. It also helps prevent discolouring of the glass.

This coffee maker makes use of the new style of vacuum brewing. This is a recent method to the UK, though it has been used from many years, In recent times though, this method has gained a lot of popularity. It is certainly a fun process to watch.

There are quite a few of these vacuum style models to pick from. This particular one is from the well known "Bodum brand." They are known for making a range of high quality coffee making products.

Price

The RRP is typically around £56, though you can get this cheaper online if you shop around.

Rating

Buyers rate their purchase as a 4.4 out of 5 star rating which is considered very good.

Brief Intro

This maker extracts all of the oils from your coffee. It is sealed so no aroma can escape. This Pebo can brew delicious coffee within 5 to 11 minutes.

The Bodum Brand

For coffee lovers the Bodum brand is instantly recognisable. They are a company from Denmark and it was founded by Peter Bodum back in 1944.

It is now managed by his son Jorgen Bodum and they primarily specialise in coffee and tea solutions. They produced the Mocca Bodum, one of the first vacuum coffee style makers.

SANTOS was the product that placed BODUM® firmly on the international stage, where it was acclaimed for its unique design and went on to become one of the most important coffee makers worldwide throughout the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.

They continue to develop and introduce many innovative products to the UK market.

Main Review of the Bodum Pebo

As I mentioned earlier, this particular brewing method is new to the UK market. It is however a fun way of making coffee, and certainly a bit different to the other options.

To use this method, which does make full flavour coffee, you will need some type of vacuum coffee maker. These are available from many brands, and this Bodum maker is simply one of those. This one can make up to 8 cups, but can also be used to make less than that. The less cups you want to make, the less time it will take to brew.

One cup for example will take about 5 minutes.

How Does the Bodum Vacuum Coffee Maker Work?

You heat the water in the lower chamber. When you do that it creates a vapour pressure. That pressure then forces the boiling water up to the upper chamber.

There it mixes with the coffee grounds. When that happens, you then remove the coffee maker from the heat.

When you do that the vacuum pressure draws the brewed coffee downward, and into the bottom jug for serving. It is a fascinating process to watch.

Important Things to Know

Below I have noted some important information, that I believe is very important to know, if you are considering buying this product.

  • This product does not come with a stand
  • This product does not come with a heater
  • You can buy these separately if you need them
  • You can however use this directly on the stove top
  • You do not require any filters

The heater and stand do add a bit of drama to the coffee making process. They are not however necessary as the coffee maker works fine on a normal stove top.

This vacuum coffee maker is ideal for making larger quantities of coffee. Personally, I don't think this is an ideal option for regularly making 1-2 cups of coffee. It is better suited when making coffee for a group of friends or family.

It is also worth noting that this particular brewing method, is not suitable for making espresso coffees of any kind. It is more "French Press" style, however it has none of the sludge associated with that French Press method of brewing.

How Buyers Rate the Bodum Pebo?

It is always important to understand what actual buyers have to say about the product. Overall buyers have rated this coffee maker as 4.4 out of 5 stars. That is a good rating, and has remained consistent over time.

You can now quickly see from the above information, that over two thirds of buyers rated this a 5 star product. 90% rated it 4 stars or higher. It is worth noting that 7% of buyers also gave this a lowly 1 star rating.

When I checked the reasons for this, I found the following were the reasons:

  • A couple of buyers said that the product was not what they expected
  • One buyer said Bodum used to offer the stand and heater but no longer do that.
  • One Buyer said that the glass developed a small fracture.

Although these complaints are of course quite legitimate, the number of complaints is very low.

Our Verdict on the Bodum Vacuum Coffee Maker

This is an interesting way of brewing coffee. It is better suited for those who want to make larger volumes of coffee. It looks really well and does make full flavoured coffee. It is also a fascinating brewing process to watch, and fun to use.

The disadvantages are that it does not make espresso types of coffee, as the vacuum brewing style means you have to use a thicker grind. Personally I would have liked to see it come with the heater and stand, even if that cost more money.

Overall though buyers liked the product, and it certainly seems to sell well enough.

  1. I find it works fine with espresso grind (at least for 2-4 cups). You get about a quarter if a teaspoon of sludge at the bottom of the jug. Far less than attempting the same in a cafetierre (yes I am that skanky with my coffee making)

  2. I have been very happy with my Bodum Pebo! I would like to share a couple of points that really helped me get the most from this coffee maker.
If you are using the stovetop, get a heat diffuser to protect the glass from the direct heat, I also heat the water on a lower (med high heat).
I also got a Cory glass rod filter on eBay ($20) to replace the plastic bodum filter. Keeping the coffee away from plastic makes a cleaner cup and the spring that holds the bodum filter seems destined to fail.
That’s all, except to emphasise how happy I am with the Bodum Pebo vacuum pot.
